As a firm, EY continually stresses the idea of formal
and informal professional relationships, and on my fourth day of internship, I
can already say that I have reaped the benefits.
Other than technology training, we had our first Tri-State
Intern event in Central Park. Tax and audit interns respectively were split
into teams based on location, and the afternoon was set-up similar to a
field day. Activities ranged from "capture the chicken" to "ultimate
frisbee" to "tug-of-war". My team (shout-out to the Mighty
Blues!) unfortunately did not succeed athletically, but we nailed the survival
skills section of the day. Other than bonding with my peers, we were able
to get to know our Senior Manager Leader, one of the EY professionals in
our office who will be our go-to person for any questions. It turned out
to be an awesome, exhausting day!
In addition, through the EY computer systems, I have been
able to get to know the teams with whom I will be working and my assignments
for the next couple of weeks. Furthermore, I was able to contact my EY
intern family - consisting of my peer advisor, counselor, and seninor manager
sponsor. Since I start client serving next Monday, I have not been able
to spend time with my EY intern family, but I look forward to building
relationships with them!
Regarding relationships, one of the most rewarding experiences
during training actually took place this evening. After a long day of technical
tax training, I was able to meet up with an EY tax professional who I met
at the Scholars Institute. I had sent him an email communicating my schedule,
and he was kind enough to show me around the Financial Service Office (FSO)
floor, and then we went out for coffee. Although a small act, the outing allowed me
to reflect on the importance of networking. I previously had only
one conversation that lasted less than 5 minutes with the professional;
however, it meant a lot to have him take time out of his busy day and show
an intern around.
EY always stresses how their people make a difference, and after my experience today,
I can truly attest to that notion! Without a doubt, my interaction with
the professional today made me feel welcomed and a part of the EY family.
Make an informal mentor: Goal Achieved!
Until Next Time,
