Believe it or not, I survived the week of
training, and I just finished my second day in the office doing real
tax work! During our first day, after I settled into the conference
room, my peer advisor (a staff 2 accountant) gave me a tour of the EY
Iselin office. We were shown where to get supplies, the organization of
the office, how to make coffee, etc. Afterwards, while some interns had
free time to do some Web-Based Learning and catch up on various
personal projects, I was put right into the mix of things: my first
assignment is a tax provision, which basically means that my team and I
will be testing the tax numbers that have been provided by the company.
After a few hours of working on variance analysis, I enjoyed a
delicious lunch with my peer advisor and counselor for a counseling
meeting. After lunch, I had the privilege of attending a conference
call for the client that we were serving for the tax provision. As an
intern, I was on the call with EY partners and senior managers from
across the country who were discussing issues relating to the client,
and it made me truly appreciate how global EY really is! Other than the
fact that I was listening in on the discussion of complicated tax
issues with people of high positions, I was on a national phone
conference! Although I didn't understand many of the aspects of the
conversation, my peer advisor was kind enough to walk me through a lot
of the technical issues!
Today, after my second day of tax provisions and variance analysis,
my peers and I went into the city for the second intern event: Dave
& Busters! This gave us the opportunity to network with our other
intern peers, catch up with the friends we had made through our week of
training, and have some fun after our first two client-serving days of
our internship!
So far, my office work at EY has been a great experience! I have
learned a lot from my peers and the EY professionals. Everyone has been
so supportive, patient, and helpful...the people have made the
environment at the office so open and warm, truly making it an
enjoyable place to work!
Sincerely Your Busy and Happy Intern,
Colette
