"It's the People."

June 27th – July 8th

“It’s the people.”

Every time I go to IMASC (Institute of Management Accountants Student Chapter) events at school, I always hear the above phrase, or at least some variation of it. Whether it’s in response to why a professional chose to work for a certain firm, or what he or she enjoys most about work, I never fully understood that particular answer until recently.

For the past two weeks I have continued doing work for the same client, but no day in the office is the quite same - and I have my co-workers to thank for that.

A big part of the EY culture is fostering and promoting formal and informal professional relationships. Every intern is assigned a peer advisor (either a Staff 1 or Staff 2 accountant) and a counselor (typically a senior manager). But as the other interns and I are realizing, there is never a shortage of EY professionals willing to offer advice and guidance. Practically every day new people come into our conference room and introduce themselves, and as the weeks go by, I’m finding I recognize more and more faces on the 28th floor.

And as I’m gradually getting to know more people in my service line, intern events have allowed me to stay in touch with the interns in Assurance and Advisory.

All interns spent the Tuesday after the 4th of July running around Philadelphia for a scavenger hunt. I sprinted up the Rocky Steps (leading to the Philadelphia Art Museum), saw one of my male teammates model a wedding dress, and did a yoga pose in Rittenhouse Square, in addition to many, many other things. After almost five exhausting hours of running around the city, we all enjoyed a delicious dinner at Maggiano’s.

The week prior to the scavenger hunt, all interns spent a day volunteering at a school in North Philadelphia. Both activities were a great way to reconnect with the interns in other service lines; and at the end of the day, it’s awesome to realize that the people you work with aren’t just your co-workers, but friends as well.

Until next time,

Liz
