Hi Everyone, and welcome to my summer internship
blog!
For the next seven weeks I will be interning at
Ernst & Young in the tax practice, and I couldn’t be more excited!
As a little introduction, my name is Liz and I will
be entering my senior year of college in the Fall. I attend The College of New
Jersey (TCNJ), where I am majoring in accountancy and pursuing a minor in professional
writing. I entered TCNJ as an open-options business major, and with the
guidance of friends and professors eventually chose to major in accounting.
Although I have second-guessed my decision numerous
times over the past year (and really, after two Intermediate classes, who
hasn’t?), my uncertainty has been replaced with excitement and jitters about my
upcoming summer experience.
It seems that everything has been leading to this
very moment – the classes, club meetings, summer leadership programs, the many,
many interviews – and now the time has finally arrived for my first day at
Ernst & Young!
I arrived at the EY office in Philadelphia a little
before 9 o’clock and was relieved to find that I was not the only one who had
arrived just in time. I quickly grabbed some breakfast and found my assigned
seat…and honestly, the day just flew by.
Today was considered our Local Office Orientation,
and we went over very general information about what to expect this summer, our
schedules, etc. Today was also a chance to become acquainted with some of the
other 50 summer interns, 10 of whom will be interning with me in the tax
practice!
As an icebreaker, we went around the room
introducing ourselves by saying 4 things: our name, college, practice, and a
fun fact. I must admit, never have I appreciated the fun fact icebreaker as
much as I did today.
During this 20 minute activity I learned that my
fellow interns and I have a lot more in common than I expected – and surprisingly,
this tiny realization helped calm my nerves, and made me even more excited for
the coming weeks.
We ended our Local Office Orientation at Marathon
Grill, which gave all interns a chance to get to know each other in a more
informal setting. Sitting around high top tables, some of us exchanged summer
stories and shared our excitement about our upcoming week of training. Training
for Assurance will be in the Philadelphia office, Advisory training is in
Virginia, and the Tax interns will be going to Ohio!
I’ll leave you with my fun fact: this time last week
I was flying home from Spain.
