I'm quoted in the New York Times today re using LinkedIn

The more business and social media sites at which you are connected , the more exposure you get.
People can find you through your friends, groups in which you participate, and your website.

I'm quoted as using my Linkedin status to tell my clients and friends about estimated tax deadlines. I'll post similar status updates at twitter, facebook and other sites.

I have been on Linkedin since 2003 and have known for many years Krista Canfield a LinkedIn spokeswoman who is also quoted in the article.  Krista informed me about the opportunity to speak with the Times reporter.

Social networking does make sense to complement and expand professional network.
My wife, a Certified Financial Planner and Enrolled Agent has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Local Newspapers. If we know professionals with deeper expertise in certain topics we often mention their names and numbers as potential sources of news.

We volunteer, even in tax season, to answer technical tax hotlines for the public; Bloomberg radio interviews about proposed tax laws and financial planning matters; local presentation by charitable organizations on topics of their choice. Newspapers run local profiles and pictures based on office, teleconference or telephone conferences interviews.
