The Small Business Administration, through its SCORE Chapters, provides free guidance and direct mentoring to small business owners in various areas including Marketing, Business plans, Financial Projections, Government Contracting, etc. These services are provided by qualified volunteers mentors.

Making your clients aware of this free of charge business mentoring, and later help them implement the results of the mentoring, they receive would add a positive impact of your role beyond the typical accounting, auditing and tax services, and may also, lead to more services your clients may request. I'm sure there are many small businesses that can benefit from SCORE,especially when the business owner comes from a background other than business. Yet my own personal experience has been eye-opening to the contrary. Twice in the past two decades I went to local SCORE offices for specific help where I hoped to tap into collective community knowledge. My last request, for example, was for help finding and evaluating the pros/cons of a new an office for relocation because I lacked contacts and know-how in commercial real estate. I must be blunt in summarizing that the value of the help I received was worth the same as I paid for it. In the end, my experience with SCORE turned out to be a lesson in the value of hiring the best professional advisers available, rather than rely on free help for important business decisions.
