Internship at Nisivoccia LLP: First Two Weeks

My name is Nicole Wiesenfeld and I recently completed my freshman year at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor. I will be posting a bi-weekly blog about my six-week internship at Nisivoccia LLP in Mount Arlington, New Jersey. Nisivoccia has been named one of the best places to work in New Jersey by NJBIZ for the fourth consecutive year in 2016. The firm offers traditional accounting and tax services while specializing in areas such as the following: employee benefit plans, governmental entities, not-for-profit organizations, and private enterprise and family owned businesses.

This summer, I am an intern in the Audit Commercial Department. Over the past two weeks, I have had responsibilities in several client engagements, with a focus on non-profit organizations. One of my main tasks was audit preparation, which includes updating audit programs and preparing workpapers. This has given me exposure to the terms, services provided, and process of completing an audit.

Additionally, one of the principals in the firm requested that I work on a project in which I track the utilization of the commercial and tax departments. By examining the Production Analyses from 2015 and 2016, I create spreadsheets and graphs on Excel to track each employee’s utilization compared to the yearly average.

The people at Nisivoccia have been very welcoming. They have taken an interest in me and always make sure to explain the reasoning behind the work they give me, and I very much appreciate that. I have been invited to networking events and have also been able to participate in the company’s philanthropy through Jean’s Day.

From my first two weeks, I have had an excellent experience and have learned so much. One thing that struck me was the importance of preparation, as I learned that like many other things in life, an audit consists of 90% planning, and 10% execution. The most important thing to me is that I am learning the basic practices of accounting firms. In the next two weeks, I will be continuing my utilization project and will hopefully gain some client exposure, as I look forward to the remainder of my internship.
